After years of struggling with dandruff and trying countless shampoos and topical creams to no avail, Teo Manning discovered a hair treatment that would change her life in more ways than one.
A friend told her about Odjibik, a scalp spa in Toronto. Odjibik literally gets to the root of common hair and scalp conditions by applying a deep cleansing treatment to the scalp – think of it as a facial for the skin on your head.
Teo noticed a huge difference after becoming a dedicated client. “I loved how my scalp was no longer itchy and the flakes were under control. My hair became shiny and healthier.”
Around this time, she also experienced health issues that made her reevaluate what she wanted to do with her life. “I knew I wanted to be my own boss, and my entrepreneurial spirit would always poke me, saying ‘you can do more, be more, love what you do!’ But fear held me back,” she says.
With her husband’s encouragement, she finally decided to take the plunge and approached Odjibik about opening a spa in Oakville. With her years of experience in the beauty industry and passion for the treatment, she was able to secure the rights to bring the concept to Oakville.
Named for the Hungarian word for “root” (a nod to Teo’s heritage), Gyökér Hair opened in January and is already generating local buzz for its revolutionary approach to hair care, as well as its zen vibe and community events, including yoga and mala-making workshops.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from a treatment:
Step 1: Scalp and Hair Microscopic Analysis
First, your technician will examine your scalp and hair under a microscope (spoiler alert: you’ll probably be alarmed by what you see, especially if you’re a product junkie like our guinea pig pictured below).
Step 2: Relaxation and Blood Circulation Next, you’ll be taken to a treatment chair for aromatherapy, followed by a neck and head massage and a hot towel finish to get your blood circulating and your mind relaxed. Throughout the treatment, you’ll be treated to a foot and calf massage to keep the blood flowing.
Step 3: Deep Cleansing and Detoxification
This is where the big guns come out. Here your technician will exfoliate product buildup, unclog pores, disinfect the skin and infuse nutrients into the scalp and roots using a mix of galvanic stimulation therapy, steam therapy (pictured below), water acupuncture therapy, shampoo and conditioner. All of the products used in the treatment are made with all-natural ingredients like licorice, green tea leaf extract, rosemary leaf extract and ginseng root extract.
Step 4: Nourishing Treatment and Consultation Finally, your technician will apply a scalp serum infused with natural vitamins and nutrients deep into the follicles and roots. Once your hair is dry, you’ll undergo another microscopic analysis, so you can see a before and after picture – you’ll be amazed at how clear your scalp looks now, not to mention your shiny, soft hair!
To finish, your technician will offer home care solutions for maintaining your squeaky-clean scalp. Perhaps the most important piece of advice you’ll receive from your consultation is one that flies in the face of current mainstream thinking about hair care – wash your hair regularly!
“For so long, we’re told not to wash our hair too often, that letting your hair go for four to seven days is great. That’s a myth,” says Teo. “In fact, not only are you going to have flat, greasy and itchy hair by the end, but you’ll congest the roots.”
