Welcome to the Neighbourhood: Maison Marie Antoinette
To experience Versailles in the heart of Downtown Oakville, take a trip to Maison Marie Antoinette, a furniture store on Robinson Street that specializes in French antiques.
Maison Marie Antoinette is a fitting name for the store. It was, after all, the infamous French queen who popularized the practice of painting furniture in the 18th century, a style that is found throughout the store’s showroom. Marie Antoinette also happens to be the middle name of the store’s owner Francine Stevenson-Boisvert.
“I’ve always had a passion for antiques and French antiques in particular are very close to my heart,” says Francine, who is French Canadian. “When I was looking for a name, I thought, ‘this is my name, it’s feminine and it represents the style.’”
Maison Marie Antoinette first opened in Toronto in 1999. At the time, Francine had just sold another business and was looking for her next venture. Her daughter suggested opening an antique store as a retirement project. “Twenty years later, here we are!” says Francine with a laugh.
Last year, Francine moved the store to her hometown of Oakville after finding the perfect location at 303 Robinson Street, a large space with high ceilings and lots of natural light. The store is a fitting addition to a neighbourhood famous for its stunning lakeside homes.
Over the years, Francine has expanded her product offering to include some contemporary pieces, although she still focuses primarily on French antiques. Each piece is individually selected by Francine herself, and she regularly travels to France to source items.
In addition to authentic French antiques, Maison Marie Antoinette also offers several styles of dining chairs for custom order, which includes a choice of wood finishes and upholstery with a good selection of fabric. Furniture repair and painting services are also available, all combined with exceptional customer service. Francine will work with clients to find the perfect piece for their home, even doing in-home consultations and making adjustments to furniture to fit the client’s needs.
